PRODUCTION

I gave myself the challenge of making a foley piece , i was struck on what to do as i needed to bear in mind that i need resources to create certain noises and that wasn't going to be easy.

As i finally came up with an idea i began editing the clip , it was going to be a scene of Pirates of the Carribean.

Heres the original clip of the scene :

i created sounds from 0:49 to 1:49

So i began editing and i recorded lots of sounds using a zoom mic :

But recording the noises was the hardest. I needed to make sure i got every noise included to really add a sense of realism. I put a backing track on the scene to add to the emotion because it also allows the audience the ability to connect emotionally to your characters and their situation, and you, the filmmaker, to reinforce your story and/or message.

HERE IS THE CLIP WITHOUT MUSIC :

As you can see the music really changes how the emotion is conveyed. Without it , it sounds a bit dead and boring however i really wanted to show what depth i went into to create these noises.

But recording the sounds was the most important , music obviously creates an impact towards films and creates all sorts of different emotions but those noises add to the realism of the film. I started off with the sword noises as that was key because that was the most common thing to happen in the scene. I used knives and forks to create the sword type noise.

As i recorded many noises to create this sequence of random noises i encountered many noises which fit perfectly with the scene. I wanted to use as little archival noises as possible. To create a foley noise it needs to be yours and that is what i wanted to stick with. I was on holiday at beach place when i could get sounds of seagulls and i was lucky enough to hear church bells which occurs in the scene i selected. Also i was able to get the noise of sea waves.

Once i knew i had got all my sounds recorded i could now put this all in premiere pro. I had all my clips named so i could easily find what i needed :

Piecing the noises together was not that bad , it was just very short snippets of a sound which was recorded for long. I needed to precise as possible.

But some of noises sounded very weak so i had ton use the effect amplify to increase the sound , i needed to be careful it didn't sound distorted.

By doing this you are increasing the sound so it can be heard more.

MANIPULATING SOUNDS IN  FOLEY

Some of the noises i had to edit to make it fit in with location , such as the only piece of dialogue said in the scene which is said inside a derelict church , however my natural instinct told me there would be a slight echo so i added that in.

WHY USE PREMIERE PRO AND NOT AUDITION ?

the reason why i used PP instead of audition is because i was working with visuals as well. I needed to make sure i was syncing the two together.

Unfortunately i had to use a piece of archival footage for one of the scenes , my main aim for this project was to use hardly no archival sounds however i couldn't get the right noise for the rocks crumbling.

FEEDBACK

Oscar- I really enjoyed watching the project youve created. I think the audio was really well done and im glad you created the voice lines too as i know they can be challenging. The only thing I would say would be that some of the sword sounds were a little sharp on the ears when wearing headphones.

jade - i really loved the final product. I especially like how you included sounds for the running and the dirt displacement. The fighting with the  swords worked really well and was clearly in time. the only improvement i would suggest for the future, is near the end you lose some of the footsteps and it would feel more complete if it had carried on throughout.
